The Best Christmas Books for Kids for Holiday Memories
As we head into the holiday season, I love gathering our favorite Christmas books for kids and placing them near the Christmas tree, where little hands can easily reach them.
Reading together during this time of year is one of the simplest ways to slow down, savor the season, and point our hearts toward the true meaning of Christmas. These stories have become a quiet anchor for our holiday traditions, and I pray they bless your home as they have ours.
“The rooms were very still while the pages were softly turned and the winter sunshine crept in to touch the bright heads and serious faces with a Christmas greeting.”
-Louisa May Alcott
Books have a way of carrying the holiday spirit into ordinary moments. We enjoy reading during breakfast, before bed, or while sipping hot cocoa on cold afternoons. For our family, these stories are not just entertainment. They are a great way to connect, reflect, and celebrate together. We have built many traditions around these books.
Why Christmas Books Matter for Children
Sharing children’s Christmas stories helps create meaningful rhythms in the home. If you’re reading to young kids, older siblings, or the whole family, books invite conversation, imagination, and faith. They are often the best gift because they nurture hearts long after the wrapping paper is gone.
I love that there’s a wide variety of Christmas gifts in book form. From a sturdy board book for toddlers to thoughtful chapter books for young readers. Many of these stories have stood the test of time, becoming favorites we return to year after year.
Gathering and Displaying Christmas Books
One simple way to encourage reading is to keep Christmas books together and visible. Each year, I place ours in a wooden crate near the christmas tree or beside a cozy chair. This easy access invites children to choose stories on their own. They also make beautiful Christmas decor.
Some families enjoy wrapping books as count-down-to-christmas gifts, opening one each night until Christmas day arrives. Others pair stories with glow sticks, small treats, or goodie bags for a fun surprise. However you choose to do it, gathering books in one place makes reading feel special.
Cozy Schooling and Read-Aloud Moments
There is something sacred about reading during Christmas time. Soft lights, quiet mornings, and the glow of the Christmas tree nearby. These moments often become our favorite Christmas stories, remembered long after the season ends.
Books are also a wonderful addition to homeschool mornings, church programs, or even a children’s ministry setting. They work beautifully for a christmas program or family night centered on storytelling.
