What is Seasonal Homemaking?
Seasonal homemaking is the practice of adjusting rhythms of household management, decorations, and routines with the seasons of the year. I wanted to provide this resource as we begin a new year and a new month because I find that homemaking can become simpler if we find seasonal rhythms.
There are a lot of different requirements throughout the year to keep a home functional and running smoothly. I will be offering monthly prompts, such as Organize, Update, Replace, and Clean, and then offer ideas of implementing these, plus ideas on how to spread these throughout the year .
Tips for Succeeding in Homemaking this Spring
Enjoy the process as you prepare your home for warmer weather. These tasks are not meant to be done in a weekend or even a week. Spreading these out over the course of the month will allow you to enjoy the process as you prepare your home or spring!
Here are some ideas to help you plan out your tasks for the month of February in a smooth, systematic way. Tackling tasks monthly this way will ensure areas in your home don’t become neglected.
February Homemaking Tasks to Refresh Your Home for Spring
1. Declutter
February is a great time to declutter as you prepare for spring and spending more time outside.
The first is to choose a number like 25 or 50, and walk all around my home with a bag and choose that many items to donate or trash. Even the smallest thing counts as an item. This could be throwing things away that have broken or donating unused home items or toys.
The second option is to just tackle one area to declutter. For example, if your kid’s room really has too many things, just focus on decluttering that one room. If that is still overwhelming, just choose one area in this room, like clothes or toys to tackle. The goal is to focus on ONE area to declutter. This is not a complete home decluttering overhaul. Choose a different area each month.
2. Organize:
Next, choose ONE area for this month to organize.
Ideas for this are:
- Tidy Closets: Clear out unused winter clothes and donate items you no longer need.
- Organize Cabinets and Drawers: Declutter and streamline storage areas, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms.
- Sort Through Paperwork: File away important documents and shred outdated ones.
3. Update:
Choose ONE area or item to update.
Ideas for this are:
- Update Décor: Swap heavy winter items like dark throws for lighter, pastel-colored options or spring pillow covers.
- Artwork: Get spring-themed art printed in preparation. There are so many budget friendly art prints available.
4. Replace:
Choose ONE area or item to replace.
Ideas for this are:
- Light bulbs
- Door Mats: Replace worn-out mats with seasonal designs or new durable ones.
- Kitchen Spices
- Kitchen tea towels

5. Deep Clean:
Choose ONE area or item to deep clean. These are areas that are often-neglected areas that don’t typically get a lot of attention.
Ideas for this are:
- Oven and Stovetop: Remove baked-on grease and clean burners and oven racks.
- Vents and Fans: Dust and clean fans.
- Carpets and Rugs: Deep clean carpets and rugs with a steam cleaner or professional service.
6. Meal Plan for February
Taking time to meal plan for the entire month will help you and your budget so much! I like to leave room in my meal plan for new meals to try, homemade healthy snacks to make, and a list of the baking I would like to do this month.
New meal ideas might be:
8. Refresh Your Space for Spring
Now that you have your home feeling clean and organized, you can think about the upcoming seasonal change and do some space refreshing.
Ideas for this are:
- Rearrange furniture to make it feel more open.
- Replace candles with fresh scents.
- Start adding some spring-type greenery into your decor.
7. Start Preparing for Spring Gardening
Begin outdoor preparations for spring. This is not really about planning out your garden just yet, but it is a good time to start gathering your list of seeds you need to order. I like to look to see when my last frost date is estimated to be so I can make sure I have all my seeds in time in case I want to start them inside.
