Inspiration for Cozy Fall Front Porch Decorating
This year we have had a record drought year, so headed into fall, the grass is not green but very dry and brown. I chose to skip the mums (which would have probably died so fast!) and instead I did dried, foraged Johnson grass (ie. dead weeds I foraged from a ditch haha).
I played up the fall season by adding lots of bright orange pumpkins, with some subtle white pumpkins mixed in. Orange or white mums would have been cute, too.

Starting with a Seasonal Color Palette
The traditional seasonal colors are burnt orange, mustard yellow, deep red, and browns. But I love adding neutral cozy options too. Colors like cream, tans, muted greens and blues for a softer look.
One of the things I have been collecting for our porch is blue striped stoneware. I want to continue adding some larger crocks as well. These add such a warm, vintage feel to the porch, and they bring in a pretty subtle color with the blue stripes. I love how the blue stripes and the orange pumpkins look together.
I also have been adding lots of terracotta pots to my porch because they add so much to the hygge-feel in every season. That natural texture and color is so pretty. The patina is unmatched in old terracotta. These are also a lovely option if you are looking to add to your collection.
Add Layers to Your Fall Porch Decor
The first thing I try to make our small front porch feel decorated without having too much decor is by adding layers in the few spots I do have to decorate. I don’t like to overdo it, especially on the steps, because they aren’t very wide. I don’t want to be tripping on things all season. The foraged Johnson grass added to my striped crock adds some height. We had some tree stumps that I added in for texture. Then I just turned the empty terracotta pot upside down so I could get the real pumpkins nice and layered in heights.
Built in 1935, our home is very small and charming. Some of the details are a little wonky, like the side steps that don’t lead anywhere. I think the side path was the original walkway to the house, and I have come to decorate it as a little plant stand.
Natural Elements for Your Best Fall Porch
One way that I like to capture the coziness of the season is to bring in natural elements to my fall decorations. I think it pulls out the colors of these season around you and helps your home fully feel like part of the season. For me, grabbing natural elements while out on a walk makes it really easy to come home and incorporate them into my decor.
My favorite example of this is my front door wreath. Check out my DIY Foraged Fall Foraged Wreath from last year. These are so easy to put together to add those natural colors and elements of the season. I love that I am sustainably decorating and it’s incredibly frugal.
My favorite part of this year’s wreath is the big stem of seed pods! It is really unique, and not something I could have gone to the store to buy. I love that.

Fall decorating should be a fun, creative process. Create a space that feels warm and inviting for the season ahead. Having a spot to sit on your porch helps, like a rocking chair. Keep a cozy throw blanket and a little side table for a warm drink to enjoy the cooler temperatures. Make it fun as you use outdoor decor to create your fall space.

What is “hygge”?
Hygge is a word that has been going around a lot lately, and I really love it. It is a feeling of cozy that hygge just encompasses so well. The Oxford dictionary says it’s “a quality of coziness and comfortable conviviality that engenders a feeling of contentment or well-being (regarded as a defining characteristic of Danish culture).” This is exactly how I want our home to feel as you walk up. I want people to feel welcome but comfortable. Inspired but relaxed. Cozy is the feeling that I want our home to evoke.

Ideas to Create a Natural Hygge Design for Your Porch
- Look for ways to incorporate natural elements, like wood, leaves, foraged grasses.
- Think “cozy”. Throw blankets and twinkle lights really evoke cozy as well. We have these outdoor lights and they the perfect twinkle size.
- Music is a nice touch to the cozy feel. We have this bluetooth speaker that we use on our porch to add to the ambiance.
- Layer in the colors of the season. Sometimes this looks like pumpkins or mums. Wheat stalks and leaves really bring that in as well. Next year I think it would look great to layer in some cut firewood. This adds to the look of whimsy, but not over dressing the porch.
- Layer in the old with the new. We have old peach crates that hold our shoes and kid toys. But then we purchased these wooden rockers for the porch. This creates a more styled look that feels intentional.
- Bring a bit of warmth from inside that will make your porch feel like an extension of your home. I think the stoneware crocks add to this. Other ideas could be brass flower pots or enamelware planters. Repurposing indoor things will provide that feel of indoor meets ourdoor.
With just a few simple ideas and decorative accents, your porch can easily become one of your favorite areas to enjoy the crisp air and beautiful fall days. Whether it’s a big front porch or a small stoop, adding porch pumpkins, fall flowers, and soft textures creates a welcoming space that makes the whole experience of autumn even more memorable.
