Why I Love Vintage Landscape Art
I’ve always loved decorating with things that feel like they could have been collected over time rather than purchased all at once. Vintage landscape art works beautifully for this because every painting feels a little different.
You can find rolling countryside, trees, rivers, farms, mountains, oceans, cottages, and quiet pastoral scenes. Some landscape paintings are dark and moody while others are light, colorful, and almost whimsical.
That variety also makes landscape artwork lends itself easy to use with different decorating styles.
Traditional homes can handle ornate frames and antique landscape art, while cottage-style spaces look lovely with pastoral scenes and countryside paintings. Even a more modern room can benefit from an old vintage landscape painting in a simple wood frame.
The goal isn’t necessarily to match your artwork perfectly to your home. I think it is much more interesting when it looks as though you simply found a painting you loved and decided to hang it.

If you’ve never used public domain art before, you may be surprised by just how much beautiful artwork is available online for free.
Museums and libraries around the world have digitized portions of their collections, and many works that are no longer protected by copyright can be downloaded as high-resolution images. This has opened up an incredible collection of free vintage art prints for anyone who loves old artwork.
You can find everything from botanical illustrations and animal paintings to portraits, still lifes, and, of course, public domain landscape art.
When down loading artwork, I like to go directly to the museum, library, or archive linked with the piece whenever possible. Look for the highest-resolution download available so you’ll have more flexibility when choosing your print size.

Choosing Landscape Art for Your Home
You don’t have to be an art expert to choose artwork for your home. Start with what you naturally like and are drawn to.
Maybe you’re drawn to moody vintage oil paintings filled with deep greens and browns. Or perhaps you prefer soft fields, blue skies, water, and pastoral landscape art.
If you’re looking for landscape painting ideas, think about the feeling of the room where the artwork will hang.
A quiet countryside scene could be beautiful in a bedroom. A larger landscape art painting can anchor a living room or dining room. Smaller pieces are wonderful tucked onto bookshelves, hung in a hallway, or mixed into a gallery wall.
Pay attention to the colors already in your room, but don’t worry about matching them exactly. Artwork that shares just one or two colors with the rest of the room can often feel more natural than something chosen specifically to “match.”
How to Make Printable Landscape Art Look Collected
The frame makes a huge difference.
Before purchasing something new, look through thrift stores, antique stores, estate sales, or even your own closets for frames. Old wood, brass, gold, and slightly worn frames can make printable landscape art look like something you’ve owned for years.
You can also mix different frames together. A small countryside landscape painting in a dark wood frame can sit beside a gold-framed pastoral scene without everything needing to coordinate.

One of my favorite things about free printable wall art is that it allows you to experiment.
Print one piece and live with it for a while. Find an inexpensive vintage frame. Add another landscape later when you find one you love. Eventually, you’ll have a small collection of artwork that feels personal to your home.
And don’t limit yourself to only landscape art. Vintage botanical prints, florals, animal artwork, and other printable vintage art can all be mixed together to create a home that feels layered and interesting.
