One of my favorite inexpensive ways to add character to a home is with vintage art. Beautiful old landscapes, botanical paintings, florals, sketches, and animal illustrations can make a room feel collected over time… and you don’t necessarily have to buy the artwork.

There are thousands of free vintage art prints available online through museum collections, libraries, and other public domain resources. Many of these pieces can be downloaded in high resolution and printed at home or through a local printer for just a few dollars.

The hardest part may simply be knowing where to look. Let me give ya some pointers!

Where to Find Free Vintage Art Prints

There are several Public Domain Resources that you can peruse and make art selections from to download and print original vintage art. You can choose however many you want of all vintage artwork! All you need to do is type in your keyword + the type of media it is. Such as “ocean watercolor” or “wildflower painting”. It’s really simple once you know where to look.

Choosing the right vintage prints for your home or project can sometimes be a challenge. It’s helpful to have a picture in mind before you start. Or even a style or frame in mind. Even if it’s just a vague idea, here are some questions to ask yourself while choosing vintage art prints:

  • What type of media? (watercolor, painting, abstract, landscape)
  • Where do I want the art print to be located in my home?
  • What are the colors that would coordinate in the space it will be located?
  • Will this piece of vintage wall art be framed by itself or in a collage?

There are also several wonderful Etsy shops that have public domain art prints that you can purchase ready to frame.

How to Search for Vintage Art

The museum collections can feel a little overwhelming at first because there is so much artwork to look through. I’ve found that it helps to search for something specific instead of simply searching for “vintage art.”

  • countryside oil painting
  • fruit still life
  • ocean watercolor
  • pastoral landscape
  • vintage horse painting
  • garden painting

You can also search by artist if you already know whose work you love.

Once you start finding pieces you like, pay attention to their colors, subject matter, and style. This can help you find other artwork that coordinates without everything needing to match perfectly.

Look for Art You Actually Love

It can be tempting to choose vintage art simply because the colors work in a room, but I think the most beautiful homes feel collected rather than perfectly coordinated.

Look for artwork that reminds you of something you love. Things like a landscape that looks like somewhere you’ve visited, a botanical print of a favorite flower, an old illustration for a child’s room, or a painting that simply makes you stop and look at it for a little longer.

Over time, you can build a small collection and move the pieces around your home as the seasons and rooms change.

And because so much public domain artwork is available to download for free, you can experiment without spending very much at all.

What to Do After You Find Your Art

Finding the artwork is only the first step. You’ll also want to make sure you download a file that is large enough to print, choose the right dimensions, decide where to have it printed, and find a frame that complements it.
