January Tasks for a Clean and Cozy Home
Happy January 2025! I hope you all had a wonderful Christmas and New Year. I wanted to start out the year with a new resource that I be will offering this year, and that is Homemaking Central. This will be a free resource for all things homemaking, like this list of January tasks for a clean and cozy home . I will be adding resources every month at Homemaking Central.
What is Seasonal Homemaking?
Seasonal homemaking is the practice of adjusting rhythms of household management, decorations, and routines with the seasons of the year. I wanted to provide this resource as we begin a new year and a new month because I find that homemaking can become simpler if we find seasonal rhythms.
There are a lot of different requirements throughout the year to keep a home functional and running smoothly. I will be offering monthly prompts, such as Organize, Update, Replace, and Clean, and then offer ideas of implementing these, plus ideas on how to spread these throughout the year .
Tips for Succeeding in Homemaking
Don’t take yourself too seriously and don’t try and get this all done in one day! We are making a HOME… a place for our people… that LIVE there. We are not being mean mamas who are trying to create a museum! Take your time throughout the month getting to these tasks, and have fun in the process. This is your space that you a creating for the ones you love!
Here are some ideas to help you plan out your tasks for the month of January in a smooth, systematic way. Tackling tasks monthly this way will ensure areas in your home don’t become neglected.
January Tasks for a Clean and Cozy Home
1. Put Away Christmas Decor
This is pretty self-explanatory. Once you are done celebrating for this year, whether this be at the New Year or maybe aft Epiphany, go ahead and get all the decor put away from Christmastide, and get your home back to its normal state.
2. Declutter
Now that you have all your Christmas decor put away, it’s time to do some decluttering before we move on to step three. I like to do this in one of two ways.
The first is to choose a number like 25 or 50, and walk all around my home with a bag and choose that many items to donate or trash. Even the smallest thing counts as an item. This could be throwing things away that have broken or donating unused home items or toys.
The second option is to just tackle one area to declutter. For example, if your kids room really has too many things, just focus on decluttering that one room. If that is still overwhelming, just choose one area in this room, like clothes or toys to tackle. The goal is to focus on ONE area to declutter. This is not a complete home decluttering overhaul.
3. Put Away New Gifts and Toys
Now that Christmas decor is put away and we have done some simple decluttering, it’s time to find homes for all the new gifts and toys that came in over Christmas. This one can be daunting for sure, so that is why we did some decluttering beforehand.
4. Organize:
Next, choose ONE area for this month to organize.
Ideas for this are:
- Gift Wrapping Items: Mine is always a mess after the holidays!
- Homeschool Items: Maybe you are about to start school back up again. Get it ready to go!
- Winter Clothes: Gloves, coats, boots
- Pantry: I do so much cooking over the holidays that my pantry always needs a re-set.
5. Update:
Choose ONE area or item to update.
Ideas for this are:
- Family photos from the last year
- Pillow covers
- Bedding: If it’s getting colder, you could put the flannel sheets on.
6. Replace:
Choose ONE area or item to replace.
Ideas for this are:
- Air Filters: this typically should be done quarterly, so this is a good time to do this.
- Batteries in your smoke detectors: typically should be done every 6 months, so January and June are good times to do this.
- Bedding: Maybe it’s getting colder and the flannel sheets need to be put on.
- Do an inventory of items that are used daily: towels, dishcloths, tea towels, rugs, measuring cups. Sometimes we don’t really see what needs to be replaced because we are on auto-pilot.

7. Deep Clean:
Choose ONE area or item to deep clean.
Ideas for this are:
- Refrigerator: inside and under.
- Couch: Remove cushions to vacuum under and move couch to vacuum and mop under.
- Bathtub
8. Make Sure it’s Cozy
Make sure blankets are fresh and ready to snuggle up in. I like to make sure there are books spread out around my house in cozy reading spots.
9. Meal Plan for January
Every single month this will be on the list! If you will take the time to make a monthly meal plan, you can use it every month and tweak it to plan and order groceries. Make things so simple!
10. Decorate for Winter
Now that you have your home feeling clean and organized, Christmas decor is put away, where are a few places to spruce up for winter? Maybe New throw pillow covers , changing out some artwork or dishes.
