Simple Winter First Birthday
I’m sharing all the details for my fourth born son’s simple winter birthday. I love making parties “aesthetic” along with being frugal, along with being meaningful. This party was will minimalist winter details featuring a cozy, neutral palette. I used simple handmade decor to pull it all together.
Minimalist + Simple Winter Party Decor
I knew I wanted to go with a simple design for this birthday because it was a busy time for our family. Making the day special but keeping it simple comes down to all the details. Celebrating our sweet children doesn’t have to cost thousands of dollars to make them feel special, loved, and to make their birthday meaningful.
First, I chose some colors that I knew I want to use for the basic design. I took a lot of inspiration from this dried orange garland that I made for, and you can see these sprinkled throughout the party decor. It is so pretty and looked like stained glass. I always draw so much inspiration from the colors in nature.
Invitation
Next, I made a party invitation to go with the theme. Kept it simple too. Catching on to the fact that this was SIMPLE?! I wanted to let the colors shine.
You can create your own minimalist party invitation using my canva template.

Food
Brunch birthdays are the best, in my opinion. Really because you have so many options to choose from and you don’t have to do a super ling-drawn out meal. I like offering grazing food options, so everyone can just visit and celebrate. I chose to do a spread of:
- Cookies: I did a mix of homemade sugar cookies and snickerdoodle cookies
- Pastries: I like having something that is a little more filling than a cookie, so I added cheese danish and some donut holes (this was a birthday boy request)
- Mixed fruit: I like to chop fresh fruit before the party and place it in the freezer for about an hour. That way it doesn’t get all mushy.
- Chex-mix: kinda random, but it’s what our family enjoys, and I like having a salty option.
- Drinks: I offered orange juice, coffee, a hot cocoa bar, and water.
- Cake: small smash cake that I purchased from Walmart, and altered for the party!
Decorations for a Simple Winter First Birthday
I like using the seasons to help lead me in decorating, at least when I don’t have a very specific theme. This party was around Christmas-time, so I used the dried oranges and evergreen clippings as a base for decorations.
I loved making this high chair banner for this simple birthday party! I printed out a “One” that matched the party invitation, then I dipped the paper in tea so it wasn’t so bright white and had more of a vintage look. The fun part came when I cut some fabric strip from the waffle-pattern fabric I bought for this party. I mixed some paint together and I did a “dipped look” on them.
After everything dried, I glued the paper onto the center of some twine. Then I folded the painted stripes in half and tied onto the twine, and spread everything out so It would cover the front of the highchair. I glued some sprigs of rosemary and dried orange slices in the corners to complete the look, then cut his little crown out of some mustard yellow felt and hot glued the seams.
I think my favorite detail was the one single white star balloon. Perfect for a sweet one year old. Dollar Tree never lets me down on balloons, which is so amazing because I live in a small town and it’s my only local option. I repurposed a chalkboard I already with a vintage hanger to hold my babies Milestone Poster, and tied the balloon to a amber bottle I had with a sprig of rosemary.
Simple Details
I have used these monthly milestone photo cards and first birthday milestone poster for two first birthdays now. They are easy to make once purchased. I bought a foam board and put the photos on it. I put the 12 month photo in a little, special spot by the cake. Then I used some of the evergreen and dried orange slices to embellish the poster. I also added a wreath I had already under the cake place. Next, I placed a sprig of rosemary on the cake for a little extra greenery with the beeswax candle.
Using things I already have is important to me because I don’t like just throwing one-time use party decor away if I don’t have to. Repurposing chalkboards, wooden sign stands, and things like that really help not only in the sustainability of a party but also the cost. I have 5 children, so party frugality is important to me. They would rather have fun birthday experiences and gifts rather than fancy party decor. I think you can make a party meaningful and pretty with using things you already own and using some creativity!
I hope this resource blesses you and your family this year!
