Take time to invest in quality items over time that will help you simplify your sourdough process and improve your baking results. Invest in these sourdough tools as you can, and enjoy the process as you start your sourdough journey!
Sourdough Starter Essentials
There are a few basic items you will need to get started baking sourdough bread, specifically how to get a good, strong sourdough starter going. These items will help get you get off on the right foot so you actually have good experience right from the start!
- Glass jars: You can use a mason jar, weck jars, old jelly jars. Just make sure they are glass containers. I prefer a wide mouth glass jars because it’s easier to stir your starter.
- Digital kitchen scale for accurate feeding: I tried to make do without a kitchen scale when I first started out in the world of sourdough, but it’s just the perfect tool to get consistent loaves each time.
- Silicone or wooden spoon: You will probably already have this. Just make sure not to use metal. I love using one that has a long handle for when you use a larger jar.

Mixing & Proofing Tools
If you want to take your sourdough bread baking to the next level, these items are very handy in making the process smoother and more efficient with more consistent results! These will help you as you mix your dough, during the bulk fermentation process, and while you proof your dough overnight.
- Good mixing bowls (glass, ceramic, or stainless steel): Having a good mixing bowl that is big enough to hold enough dough for two loaves. I also love these cambro containers so you can watch your sourdough as it rises.
- Danish dough whisk: This is so great to have when you mix your sticky sourdough.
- Bench scraper or bench knife: Great for cutting and shaping bread, and also for cleaning your counters.
- Proofing basket (bannetons): These are for your overnight fermentation in the refrigerator.
- Tea towels or dish towels: Handy to have for covering your dough while it rises in your mixing bowl.
Baking Equipment
- Dutch Oven: Having a nice dutch oven to bake your loaves in really improves your bakes! When you have the budget, this is the piece of equipment I would invest in first to have consistent bakes.
- Loaf Pans: These are great for making sourdough sandwich bread.
- Silicone bread sling for Dutch oven: These are so helpful in lifting your dough and bread in and out of a hot Dutch oven if you are wanting something reusable in place of parchment paper.
- Bread lame or sharp razor blade for scoring: I have tried both and really both work equally well.
- Bread knife: Having a sharp knife to slice your bread is handy when serving your bread.

Optional But Helpful Extras
- Digital Thermometer: This is handy to have to check the internal temperature of your bread.
- Banneton liners: These making clean up a breeze. Flour tends to get stuck in the bannetons, so having liners you can take out and wash is so nice.
- Bowl covers, jar bonnets, or plastic shower caps: I love these for my sourdough starter and for covering my bowl while my sourdough bread rises. These elastic food cover are washable and the colors in the pack are so pretty.
