What is Seasonal Homemaking?
Seasonal homemaking is the practice of adjusting rhythms of household management, decorating, and home routines with the seasons of the year. I wanted to provide this resource every month because I find that homemaking can become simpler if we find seasonal rhythms.
There are a lot of different requirements throughout the year to keep a home functional and running smoothly. I will be offering monthly prompts, such as Organize, Update, Replace, and Clean. And also offering ideas in how to implement these. Plus, ideas on how to spread these tasks throughout the year in a way that keeps you on top of your home! A full list of every month’s homemaking tasks are found at Homemaking Central.
Tips for Deep Cleaning
Try and enjoy the process as you prepare your home for summer. I like to make coffee and start by walking through my home and taking mental inventory of what needs to be done. After that, I will think through which tasks to do first. These tasks are meant to be spread throughout the entire month. So take your time to plan out how to tackle them accordingly.
These are some ideas to help you plan out your tasks for the month of May in a smooth, systematic way. Tackling deep cleaning tasks monthly this way will ensure areas in your home don’t become neglected.

The Essential May Deep Clean House Checklist
1. Declutter
May is a great time to declutter as you prepare for summer and spending lots of time outdoors or on vacations.
There’s a few ways I like to declutter, but the simplest is to grab a trash bag and walk through my home quickly, picking 25-50 items to get rid of. Even the smallest thing counts as an item. This could be throwing things away that have broken or donating unused home items or toys. Just get the junk out! That way you will have less to maintain, and can focus on keeping the important stuff tidy.
2. Organize:
Next, choose ONE area for this month to organize.
Ideas for this are:
- Tidy Closets: Clear out unused or unseasonal clothes, and donate items you no longer need.
- Organize Cabinets and Drawers: Declutter and streamline storage areas, especially in the kitchen and bathrooms. Take a trash bag and fill it with expired items in your bathroom!
- Sort Through Paperwork: File away important documents and shred old ones.
3. Update:
Choose ONE area or item to update.
Ideas for this are:
- Update Décor: Swap spring pastels for summer colors! I love incorporating more whites and blues for summer for a fresh, light feel.
- Artwork: Swap out a few pieces in your home. There are so many budget friendly art prints available. Here’s a post all about How to Print and Display Vintage Art Prints in Your Home if you need ideas.
4. Replace:
Choose ONE area or item to replace.
Ideas for this are:
- Light bulbs
- Door Mats: I love fresh door mats for summer!
- Kitchen Spices
- Kitchen tea towels
5. Deep Clean Under Furniture or Appliances:
Choose ONE area to deep clean under. These are areas that are often-neglected areas that don’t typically get a lot of attention.
Ideas for this are:
- Oven and Stovetop: Remove baked-on grease and clean burners and oven racks.
- Under the couch or armchairs.
- Move the refrigerator and sweep and mop. Give the back a good wipe to clear off any dust.
6. Meal Plan for May
Taking time to meal plan for the entire month will help you and your budget so much! I like to leave room in my meal plan for new meals to try, homemade healthy snacks to make, and a list of the baking I would like to do this month. 8. Refresh Your Space for Summer
Now that you have your home feeling clean and organized, you can think about the upcoming seasonal change and do some space refreshing.
Ideas for this are:
- Rearrange furniture to make it feel more open.
- Replace candles with new scents.
- Lightweight blankets and throws
7. Outdoor Prep
Summer is all about outdoor time for a lot of families. Make sure everything is ready to go for all the fun and time spent together working or playing.
Areas to tackle are:
- Porches or patios
- Garage or shop areas where you keep outdoor maintenance tools like mowers, grill supplies, etc.
- Any pools, sprinklers, or fun water activities are ready to play with.
