Mother culture is the practice of tending to your own soul as a mother, and continuing your own growth spiritually, intellectually, and creatively. It’s all about making space for Truth, Beauty, and Goodness in the midst of busy motherhood and family-life.
Th phrase “Mother Culture” is coined by Charlotte Mason’s community of home educators. Mother Culture is all about mothers nourishing their minds with good books, grow in their own faith, and creating with their hands to add beauty to their days. Simply put: mothers who continue to cultivate their minds. The whole concept is that they will be better equipped to pour into their homes and children with joy, wisdom, and grace by pouring into their own souls first.
It’s not about doing more and filling your days with more stuff. It’s simply about choosing what fills you up in quiet, sustainable ways so you can give from a place of abundance, not exhaustion.
“Mothers work wonders once they are convinced that wonders are demanded of them.” – Charlotte Mason
A Sample Summer Mother Culture Rhythm
In the slower pace of summer, a simple daily rhythm can offer both structure and space for rest.
A gentle rhythm doesn’t have to be rigid or complicated to follow. It can be a planned rhythm first thing in the morning, or it can be small portions of structure throughout your day. The time should flow with your season of life, supporting you while leaving room for spontaneity, rest, and presence. It might include:
- a few quiet moments in the Word before the day begins
- a short time set aside for personal reading or journaling
- a pocket of creativity in the afternoon. Maybe something done with your hands that brings joy in a quiet moment.
