Ideas, Tips, and Cost of a Small Kitchen Renovation
Enjoy this breakdown of ideas, tips, and cost of a small kitchen renovation. I give actual numbers and a timeline of the updates we did.
The kitchen truly is the heart of the home. It’s a space where daily life unfolds, meals are shared, and family rhythms take shape. If you’re planning a small kitchen renovation, you’re probably wondering about the overall cost, what upgrades are really worth it, and how to create a space that feels both charming and functional. Those were my top priorities for my kitchen update.
Our kitchen is about 300 square feet, which puts it into the category of smaller kitchens. While it may not be a large kitchen with endless square feet, there are so many best ways to make a small space work beautifully. Maybe you’re considering minor updates or maybe a full kitchen remodel, thoughtful design choices can dramatically change how your space feels and functions overall.
Before jumping into finishes and colors, let’s talk about the key factors that influence the average kitchen renovation cost , and why smaller spaces often come with hidden perks.
Understanding Small Kitchen Renovation Costs
One of the first questions most people ask is: How much did that cost? The truth is that the size of your kitchen, project scope, and quality of materials all influence the final cost. According to recent industry cost reports, the national average cost for kitchen remodeling often falls between roughly $14,000 and $40,000, with costs commonly ranging around $75–$250 per square foot depending on finishes and layout changes.
For smaller kitchens, renovation budgets can still vary widely. A minor kitchen remodel with cosmetic upgrades will look very different from a complete overhaul or total gut job involving structural changes, electrical work, or moving gas lines.
Some important factors affecting your total budget include:
- Labor costs and installation costs
- New cabinets vs. stock cabinets (or just updating the paint like we did!)
- Custom cabinetry or custom cabinets priced by linear foot
- New appliances and kitchen appliances upgrades
- New flooring or hardwood floors
- Lighting fixtures and pendant lights
- New countertops like quartz countertops, granite countertops, laminate countertops, or natural stone
- Layout changes and kitchen layout redesign
- Necessary permits and inspections
- Quality of materials and premium materials
The Perks of a Small Kitchen
A smaller kitchen often gets overlooked, but there are real advantages to one!
First, the overall cost is usually lower than larger kitchens simply because there’s less square foot area to renovate. Fewer cabinets, less countertop space, and fewer materials all add up to savings, especially if you’re doing a basic kitchen remodel or mid-range kitchen renovation.
Second, smaller kitchens can be incredibly efficient. With a smart kitchen layout, everything stays within reach, making cooking easier and daily life smoother. Instead of spreading your budget thin in a large kitchen, you can invest in better finishes, energy-efficient appliances, or thoughtful kitchen upgrades that actually improve functionality.
And finally, small kitchens often feel cozier! This is something many homeowners crave, and why I have loved our 1930’s kitchen in our home. We bought it with all the original wooden cabinets, and have turned it into a true Unfitted Kitchen. When done well, updating your kitchen increase your home’s resale value and appeals to potential buyers who want a functional but charming space.
Creating a Charming and Cozy Kitchen Space
A cozy kitchen doesn’t require a massive renovation or a high-end kitchen budget. Sometimes the best ways to transform a space are through thoughtful details. When I was planning our kitchen update, I really wanted to keep the cozy and original design in mind.
Start with the atmosphere:
- Add a fresh coat of paint to brighten walls or cabinets.
- Update light fixtures or add warm pendant lights over a kitchen island.
- Install a tile backsplash or wallpaper to add texture and personality.
- Swap out new hardware on kitchen cabinets for an instant refresh.
- Choose warm materials like wood accents, pops of color, or soft matte finishes.
If you’re working with existing kitchen cabinets, minor updates like painting or refacing can look almost like new cabinets for a lower end investment than full replacement. Stock cabinets are another great way to reduce costs without sacrificing style.
Don’t overlook finishing touches, like a new sink, range hoods, or under-cabinet lighting fixtures can completely elevate the feel of a space without the price tag of a complete overhaul.

Design Tips + Choices That Matter Most
When planning your project, it helps to think through what really matters for your family and daily rhythms.
Some popular choices right now include:
- Stainless steel kitchen appliances for durability
- Quartz countertops for easy maintenance (if you’re budget allows)
- Kitchen island additions for storage and gathering
- Open shelving mixed with kitchen cabinets
- Simple backsplash designs
- Energy-efficient appliances for long-term savings
- Warm lighting to add coziness
You can work with an interior designer or kitchen designer to maximize layout efficiency, especially when working in smaller kitchens. For us personally, I knew I wanted to keep the charm of our 1930’s craftsman. We had lived here for 6 years and I knew exactly what would “go” with the house. There really is something to be said for taking your time to renovate your house.
Small Kitchen Renovation Cost Breakdown
Here’s a practical breakdown of our kitchen update budget with real numbers. This should help give a clear framework of budget while still feeling approachable. This gives you a plan on what we were able to do in our kitchen for a smaller budget.
We have done a few things over the years, like add some open shelving above the baking area and replaced the stove, but I am going to solely focus on what we recently did for the sake of transparency.
Total Budget: $2,000
Paint + Supplies: Sherwin Williams ‘Alabaster’ in Semi-Gloss for Cabinets $75, Color matched Farrow and Ball ‘French Grey’ in Semi-gloss for Kitchen Island- $25, SW ‘Homburg Gray’ in Satin for Kitchen Door – $25
New Hardware: latches $20, wooden knobs $10
Laminate ‘White Marble ‘ Countertop: $200 (I do not recommend this countertop we used. It looks great but isn’t my favorite overall, so I will not link.)
Stainless Steel Sink: $80
Bridge Faucet: $100
Peel and Stick Delft Wallpaper : $60
Rub n’ Buff ‘Antique Gold’ for Pendant Light Refresh: $10
Dishwasher: $300
Updated Electricity for dishwasher install: $600
Range Hood: $145
Miscellaneous Plumbing Supplies: $50
Final Cost: $1,710
This kind of breakdown and cost of a small kitchen renovation also helps understand how quickly appliances and labor can shape the overall cost. Updating the electricity to be able to install the dishwasher and make it compliant was a bulk of the budget but needed to be done. We did all the other installation for our kitchen. So if that is already done in your kitchen, the actual cosmetic and aesthetic part of your update will be much less.
What Kind of Renovation Are You Actually Planning?
Not every project needs a total gut job. Here’s a simple way to think about it:
Minor Updates
- Fresh coat of paint
- New hardware
- Lighting fixtures
- Cosmetic upgrades, like paint or wallpaper
Mid-Range Kitchen Renovation
- New countertops
- New sink
- Stock cabinets or semi-custom cabinets
- New flooring
- Appliance swaps
Major Remodel or Full Kitchen Remodel
- Layout changes
- Structural changes
- Custom cabinets
- Premium materials
- Moving gas lines or plumbing
The more changes you make to the entire kitchen layout, the higher the total cost, but these improvements can also increase your home’s value if done right. We personally did not want to mess with the old knob and tube wiring for safety reasons, so it was 100% worth it to hire this out.

Timeline of a Small Kitchen Renovation
This is actually a major perk of a small kitchen renovation. It is faster to renovate and update. We were able to demo, paint, install dishwasher, update plumbing and electricity, replace countertop, sink, faucet, install wallpaper and hardware in less than a week! The bulk of it was over a weekend and all the fishing touches, like caulking and painting the wooden knobs occurred during the rest of the week.
Obviously the more you do, the longer it will take. I loved only being out a kitchen sink for less than a week.
Final Thoughts On If a Small Kitchen Renovation Is Worth It
A small kitchen renovation doesn’t need to be extravagant to be beautiful. We did so much for our kitchen within a smaller budget. In fact, smaller kitchens often force us to make intentional design choices, and that intentionality creates spaces that feel warm, inviting, and really personal.
If you’re tackling a basic kitchen remodel for the first time or dreaming about a new kitchen that better supports your family life, remember that charm doesn’t come from square feet. It comes from thoughtful design, cozy details, and creating a space that serves your daily rhythms.
